Methane from a biogas plant?
A biogas plant is a facility that breaks down organic waste and converts it into biogas, which can be used as a fuel. The process of producing biogas involves four different phases: hydrolysis, acid phase, acetic acid phase and methane gas phase. Here is a brief description of each phase:
1. Hydrolysis: de koolhydraten van organisch materiaal worden door bacteriën afgebroken tot kleinere deeltjes.
2. Acid phase: the particles (carbohydrates and amino acids) are broken down by bacteria into carbon dioxide, hydrogen, ammonia and organic acids.
3. Acetic acid phase: the bacteria further convert the organic acids into acetic acid, carbon dioxide and hydrogen.
4. Methane gas phase: methanogenesis where Methanogenen convert these parts into methane and carbon dioxide.
The biogas produced can be used as a fuel for heating, electricity or transportation. Biogas plants are a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels and can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It is now hopefully clear that in both situations many factors influence the production of methane and both are biological processes.
